Parent Q&A Session: Thursday, October 9 7-8pm
Information for Bear Creek Parents
Hello new parents! We are excited your student is interested in speech & debate. As covered in there parent meeting, here are some of the obligations we need parents to help with:
Sign up for Speech and Debate in FinalForms and complete all required forms (trip release, medical authorization, etc). Your student cannot compete without this information!
Practices for debate events occur every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm, with Speech taking place on Thurdays between 4:30-5:30. All novices are required to participate in speech during their first semester, unless they cannot attend on Thursdays at all.
We need an adult chaperone in each room students are meeting in, so we rely on parents to help with this (as we only have 1-2 advisors onsite and multiple squads). Parents are not expected to teach/judge, only to reach out to the advisor if there are any issues (ex. in the rare event of a medical emergency) - you are welcome to sit in the back and get some work done on your laptop! Parents must be background checked and sign up in advance - links to both are provided above.
A yearly club fee of $160 will be assessed via TouchBase on all members (aside from those receiving free/reduced price lunch), which covers participation in all 14 local and online tournaments, as well as membership in the National Speech & Debate Association Honor Society (only exclusion is travel tournaments). Payment is required before students attend any tournaments.
All student information will be done within our Teams server and SharePoint page, which includes all tournament signups and club communication. Please encourage students to check these regularly!
When students sign up for tournaments, we need parents to assist with judging. Note that for novices (new debaters at the high school level), our varsity members are able to help cover judging, so you may not need to judge for your first few tournaments until your student moves up to the varsity level.
